Touch down in Windhoek and begin your 8-day Namibia circuit with a transfer to the Sossusvlei Namibia Desert Lodge, tucked against the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. There’s nothing on the agenda for the rest of the day beyond settling in and watching the desert change color as the light fades over the dunes.
A full day is dedicated to Sossusvlei, where wind-sculpted dunes rank among the tallest in the world and turn a deep rust-red in the early light. From there you’ll walk out onto Dead Vlei, a blindingly white clay pan where centuries-old camelthorn trees stand blackened but intact — one of the most photographed sights in Southern Africa.
Leave the red dunes behind for the cool Atlantic coast, driving through the changing textures of the Namib to reach Swakopmund, a seaside town with unmistakable German-colonial architecture. Once settled, join an afternoon flamingo excursion along the lagoons that fringe the town, where large flocks gather to feed in the shallow tidal water.
This morning belongs to the Living Desert, a guided walk through the dunes just outside Swakopmund led by a tracker skilled at spotting the desert’s smallest residents — geckos, chameleons and side-winding adders that survive on nothing but coastal fog. Afterward, take the rest of the day to enjoy Swakopmund’s promenade, restaurants and beachfront at your own pace.
Head north along Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, a fog-bound stretch of Atlantic shoreline notorious among sailors for its shipwrecks and unforgiving swells. En route, stop to view a colony of Cape fur seals hauled out along the coast before continuing inland to Twyfelfontein Country Lodge for the night.
Continue east into Etosha National Park, built around a vast, shimmering salt pan that dominates the landscape and draws wildlife to the waterholes around its edges. Settle into your lodge in time for an afternoon game drive, watching for elephant, giraffe and antelope coming in to drink as the day cools.
Spend a full day exploring Etosha, moving between waterholes where game concentrates in the dry, open terrain — lion, rhino, zebra and springbok are all possible sightings, alongside Etosha’s resident elephant herds. Lunch is included at your lodge, with more game viewing planned for the afternoon light.
