The Elephant Encounter brings you face to face with a small herd of habituated elephants at a private facility a short drive from Victoria Falls. Each elephant here has its own story — many were orphaned or displaced and have been raised by their handlers from a young age — and you’ll spend your time on foot in their company rather than observing from a vehicle.
This is not elephant riding, which Ubuntu African Safaris does not offer: it’s an educational, hands-on encounter built around respect for the animals, led by the handlers who work with them daily. You’ll learn to interpret their behaviour, feel the texture of their skin and trunk, and understand the conservation and welfare work behind the herd.
What To Expect
Arrive at the elephant facility and meet your handlers for a short safety briefing covering elephant behaviour, boundaries and how to move calmly around the herd.
Join the elephants on a gentle walk through the bush, staying close alongside them as they forage, learning individual personalities and histories directly from the handlers who raised them.
A quieter interlude with the herd at rest, where you can observe (and, at the handler’s discretion, gently touch) the elephants and ask questions before your transfer back.
